Winter Tree Care

Winter in the Peace Region can be a wonderland of snow-covered landscapes, but it also brings challenges for your trees. With freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and icy winds, your trees need a little extra care to stay healthy and strong. Here are a few simple tips to help your canopy thrive this winter season:

1. Prune with Purpose

Winter is the perfect time to prune your trees. With the leaves gone, it’s easier to spot weak or damaged branches that could break under the weight of snow or ice. Focus on removing deadwood and shaping your tree for balanced growth in spring.

2. Mulch for Warmth

Spread a layer of mulch around the base of your trees to insulate their roots. Mulch acts like a cozy blanket, regulating soil temperature and retaining moisture during the cold months. Just be sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

3. Protect Against Snow and Ice

After a heavy snowfall, gently brush snow off branches with a broom to prevent breakage. Avoid shaking the branches, as this can cause further damage. For younger trees, consider wrapping their trunks with burlap to shield them from frost and windburn.

4. Hydrate Before the Freeze

Give your trees a deep watering in late fall before the ground freezes. This helps them store enough moisture to survive the dry winter months. But remember: water only when the temperature is above freezing to avoid creating icy soil conditions.

5. Keep an Eye on Pests

Some pests, like voles and rabbits, can wreak havoc on your trees in winter. Use tree guards or wrap trunks with hardware cloth to prevent gnawing and bark damage.

Bonus Tip: Plan for Spring

Winter is a great time to assess your trees’ overall health and plan for any treatments or planting you want to tackle in the spring. Your trees may be dormant during the winter, but with a little TLC, you can ensure they’re ready to burst into life when spring arrives.
